1) WHAT ARE EXTENSIONS MADE FROM?
There are two types of hair extensions. Synthetic and 100% natural human hair.
As the name implies, synthetic hair extensions are made from synthetic fibre. They are usually created with silicone to look natural. The silicone coating however washes off after a couple of washes. This leaves the hair dry and tangly. They cannot be dyed or styled with heat and usually last between 1 to 3 months depending on how often and how long it is worn.
HUMAN HAIR EXTENSIONS
Human hair extensions use human hair. They last longer between 6 to 12 months generally, however the more expensive varieties can last even longer. They look and feel more natural because all the cuticles face the same way. They can be styled with heat products (I dont recommend doing it in a daily basis though) and they can also be dyed to an extent.
2) HOW ARE THE EXTENSIONS GOING TO BE APPLIED?
There are so many different methods of hair extensions application and I get really weary about the one methods fits all technique used by some hair extensionist. Everybody's hair is different from the texture, their style, their way of life, age, etc. all these factors ought to be discussed with your hair extensionist before deciding on the best method for you to choose.
There is no such thing as "one method fits all" in hair extensions. Make sure to know and understand the technique that your stylist is recommending for you. Ask questions and do your own research before you decide.
Individual strand method application allows a customised more natural look
The wefted method gives more volumme and are ideal for tick hair.
Avoid getting extensions that are havier and thicker than your hair. If your extensions are too heavy, they will damage your hair
3) IS CARING FOR YOUR EXTENSIONS GOING TO BE DIFFICULT?
Different types of hair extensions require different care and it is important that you follow your stylist advise. Hair extensions can be very expensive and the way they are cared for can help them last longer.
Although human hair extensions are real human hair they must be treated gently.
Use the right brush for your extensions (Often a loop brush) made for extensions so that you don't damage your extensions by brushing.
Use a gentle shampoo and cool water to minimise tangles.
A light conditioner will help reduce tangling and keep the hair supple.
Sleep with your hair in a hair net in a ponytail or in plaits to avoid bedhead and knots.
